Privacy Policy
Effective date: 18 August 2026
Meret is a private, on-device app for capturing and organizing your musical ideas.
- We do not collect your data. There are no accounts, no analytics, no ads, and no tracking.
- Your recordings and their details stay on your device.
- The app does not have permission to use the internet, so it cannot send your data to us or to anyone else.
- Your recordings and their details are never uploaded to a server. They leave your device only when you choose to share or export something, or when you transfer them directly to a new phone that you set up yourself.
Who this applies to
This policy covers the Meret app on Android. It describes how the app handles information on your device.
What the app uses on your device
Meret needs a small set of device features to do its job. It uses them only for the feature described, and only while you are using that feature.
- Microphone. The app records audio when you choose to record. Recordings are saved on your device. The microphone is used only during an active recording.
- Notifications. While a recording is running, the app shows a notification so you can see that capture is in progress and control it. This is part of the Android foreground service that keeps a recording reliable when the screen is off or the app is in the background.
- On-device storage. Your recordings, the details you add such as titles, tags, moods, and instruments, and the small waveform previews are stored in the app's private storage area on your device.
What we collect
Nothing.
- We do not create an account for you and we do not ask for your name, email, or any personal profile.
- We do not include analytics, advertising, crash reporting, or any third party tracking software.
- The app is built with a minimal set of components and does not embed any third party service that would receive your data.
- The app does not request internet access, so it has no technical ability to transmit your recordings, your notes, or any usage information off your device.
Where your data is stored
Everything the app creates is stored locally on your device:
- Audio recordings, kept as files in the app's private storage.
- The metadata you add and the relationships between sessions and ideas, kept in a local database on the device.
- Cached waveform previews used to draw the audio.
Source recordings are treated as your creative material. The app is designed not to silently delete or degrade them.
When your data leaves your device
There are only two ways your data can leave your device, and both are in your control.
- When you share or export. If you choose to export or share a recording or an idea, Android hands the exported file to whatever app or destination you pick, for example a messaging app, email, or cloud drive. From that point the file is handled by the app or service you chose and by its own privacy terms, not by Meret.
- When you move to a new phone. If you set up a new device and transfer your data directly from your old one, your recordings and their details can move with your vault. This is a direct transfer between your own devices and does not go through our servers or any cloud service.
Your recordings and their metadata are excluded from cloud backup, so they are never uploaded to a remote server as part of an Android device backup. We never receive any of this data. We have no servers, and the app cannot send data to us.
Permissions summary
| Permission | Why the app asks for it |
|---|---|
| Microphone (RECORD_AUDIO) | To record the audio you choose to capture. |
| Foreground service and microphone service | To keep a recording running reliably with a visible notification while the screen is off or the app is in the background. |
| Post notifications | To show the recording status notification. |
The app does not request location, contacts, camera, phone, or internet access.
Keeping and deleting your data
You control your data.
- Deleting a recording or an idea in the app removes it from your device.
- Uninstalling the app removes the app's local data from your device.
Children
Meret is a general audience creativity tool and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect information from children, and in fact the app does not collect personal information from anyone.
Security
Because your data stays on your device, its security is tied to your device's own protections, such as your screen lock and device encryption. We recommend keeping your device secured. If you share or export a recording, protect it wherever you send it. For more, see the security page.
Future features
Meret today works fully offline and does no cloud or artificial intelligence processing of your recordings. If a future version adds a feature that sends any data off your device, for example optional cloud backup, sync, collaboration, or AI assistance, this policy will be updated before that feature ships, and any such processing will be made clear and put under your control.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes, the effective date at the top will be updated. Significant changes will be highlighted in the app or its store listing.
